A New Mattress Can Do Wonders For Your Sleep

You are having back problems and think it might not help that you have been sleeping on the same mattress since college. Well, you’re right-it may not be helping at all. It may be aggravating your back problems even further. I never realized how much a new mattress means to good night’s sleep and waking up feeling refreshed-until I bought a new one.

I am not saying a new mattress will heal back problems. I am just saying that if you are sleeping on a mattress that is super old, it probably is not helping to relieve any back problems you may be experiencing. The support provided by a new mattress is paramount to a good night’s sleep.

The Old Mattress

Your old mattress may have random box springs or other technology that no longer provides good, evenly distributed support due to age and wear. This can result in tossing and turning trying to find a good position, or even worse, sleeping in place once you find a good spot- afraid to move! Waking up with a sore neck, shoulder, and back is no fun, not to mention the fact that you feel you didn’t sleep well and are waking up tired.

The New Mattress

Newer sleep technology is evident in the expanding variety of mattress types from which to choose:

Mattress Buying Guide
  • Individually wrapped Bedsprings
  • Memory Foam (e.g. Tempurpedic)
  • Gel-infused Memory Foam
  • Lates
  • Air (e.g. Sleep Number)
  • Adjustable

Each of these mattress types address a variety sleep needs. They each have a variety of features that may help to relieve your back problems. When you are shopping for a new mattress, keep your back concerns in mind. Lie on each type of mattress long enough to get an idea of how your back feels in different sleep positions (lie on your back and on each side). Also, while you are testing the mattresses, make sure you are using a pillow like the one you sleep on at home.

When you find the mattress that works for you, keep in mind that the display model (e.g. "Firm") may be slightly softer than the same bed you purchase ("Firm"), because it has been laid upon many times. You will need to decide between different levels of firmness (e.g. plush to extra-firm, etc.). The level of firmness depends upon your comfort level while resting on the bed.

A new mattress that feels great to you will do wonders for your quality of sleep, and also help relieve your back problems. The sleep associates at Cloud9 will walk you through the entire selection process. Sweet Dreams!
